The Australian Tax Office has issued a reminder for taxpayers not to give out any of their personal details in response to emails. The latest email scam being circulated found its way to my gmail account, and no doubt countless other email addresses, and says the Tax Office has discovered that it owes you an extra refund. It uses the ATO logo and is sent from an address that appears as tax@ato.gov.au.
The email I received reads as follows:
"After the last annual calculation of your fiscal activity we have determined that you are eligible to receive a tax refund of AUD 452. Please submit the tax refund and allow us 2-5 business days in order to process it."The email asks you to click on a link to claim the money, which leads to a very official looking fake ATO web page that asks for income details, and then directs you to a page that asks for credit card details.
The tax commissioner, Michael D'Ascenzo, is urging anyone who receives this email, or similar ones purporting to be from the Tax Office, to delete it.The Tax Office never sends emails asking people to provide personal information including credit card details," he said.

Firefighters are battling 25 bushfires across Victoria, as the death toll rises to 181, making it the country's worst bushfire disaster. Victorian Premier John Brumby says he expects the death toll from the disaster to exceed 200, with more than 50 people still missing, thought to be dead.
The blazes have burnt through more than 3,000 square kilometres - entire towns were wiped off the map within 24 hours at the weekend. More than 900 homes have been destroyed and 7,000 survivors have registered for assistance with the Red Cross.

Ms Scrymgour, the highest-ranking Aboriginal politician in Australia, stepped down because of illness and stress caused by the death of her father. Ms Scrymgour will remain the Member for Arafura, but will no longer be in charge of any portfolio.
She told the media she could no longer continue the "hectic" pace of Cabinet and did not want to be a "weak link" in the Government."I cannot continue at the level that is required as a Minister and deal with my health issues," she said.
Ms Scrymgour held the crucial portfolio of Indigenous policy and up until last week was in charge of education. Her resignation left a big gap in the Henderson Cabinet. |

Mark Standen, the Assistant director of the top secret NSW Crime Commission who oversaw some of Australia's biggest drug investigations, has been arrested for alleged involvement with an international drug ring. Police will allege the plan was to hide more than 600 kilograms of pseudoephedrine in a shipment of rice. That is enough to make around 500 kilograms of 'ice' with a street value of at least $120 million.12 significant suspects were arrested in several Dutch cities late last week. The arrests were linked to Operation Octans, run by the Australian Federal Police (AFP), and involved work with authorities in the Netherlands, Pakistan, the UK, the United Arab Emirates and Portugal. Portugal was home to James Henry Kinch, a British national born in Ireland who was arrested in Bangkok on Saturday and is described as a crucial middle man. |

A study at Darwin's Menzies School of Health Research has found Indigenous Australians have a significantly higher rate of preventable cancers, like lung and liver cancer, than other Australians.
Epidemiologist Alice Rumbold says the study also shows Aboriginal people are more likely to die from the disease because of inadequate treatment.
Researchers have consistently found Indigenous adults are more than twice as likely to smoke than the broader population, and Ms Rumbold says too often they are diagnosed when the cancer is already well advanced.
She says there is a clear need for more smoking related treatment. |
