    Family Services Project

The Family Service Centre (Social Education) aims to develop capacity and provide support towards independence, in social issues, to improve well being of Yolŋu people in Darwin.

    Why ?
Yolŋu people staying with relatives in Darwin are forced to live in a way of life foreign to their own, often experiencing overcrowding and increased alcohol consumption, which can create money problems that can cut them off from their community. Some Yolŋu live as long grassers while away from their communities and experience problems with the law (including rubbish removal, robbery, intoxication and assault) made worse by Yolŋu often not understanding Balanda social systems, functions and behaviours.

    Some of our achievements...

  • Worked to repatriate some Yolŋu people back home to their communities when they became stuck in major town centres.
  • Taught Yolŋu people in major town centres about responsibilities in relation to Territory Housing, including overcrowding, paying bills and rubbish removal.
  • Worked to support the education of Yolŋu children while they were in Darwin, assisting with
enrolment in schools and facilitating regular attendance.
  • Worked with young Yolŋu people to combat the impact of the drug culture which partly results from massive confusion they face living in a strange and foreign world.
