    Yolŋu Radio Darwin Launch

    On the 1st November 2006 in Darwin, Northern Territory’s Chief Minister, Clare Martin officially launched Yolŋu Radio, a new Indigenous radio service broadcasting in Arnhem Land. Following a traditional ceremony performed by a Yolŋu clan from north-east Arnhem Land, and words from Yolŋu Radio listeners, the Chief Minister launched the ground-breaking service saying;

    “Yolŋu Radio is the first Indigenous radio service in the country to provide coverage to a wholeculture and language group.”

    “I’d like to congratulate Aboriginal Resource and Development Services for a job well done.”

    From the 1 November 2006, Yolŋu Radio will be broadcasting in Darwin 24 hours a day, 7 seven days a week, using a new, more powerful transmitter and antenna installation.

    Yolŋu Radio delivers vital education to the Yolŋu people in their own language on subjects such as Health, Law, Economics and Governance. Educational programs are interspersed with Yolŋu contemporary and traditional music.

    This is the first time such a service has been made available in Darwin, Palmerston and the rural area,completely in the language of the Yolŋu people.
